August 13th, Farm life
I am staying on an Organic self-sufficient farm, where they produce most of what they eat. A family that lives to work their land. They grow many vegetables, some of them I had never heard of before, they have chicken, turkeys, goats, cows and horses. They also produce maple syrup. For breakfast on Thursday I had oats that I rolled myself for the first time in my life, and for lunch, I prepared the potato salad with ingredients that were given to me; potatoes, green beans, two kinds of lettuce, herbs, flowers, cheese, eggs, peppers, and I am forgetting a few. I was a complete meal on its own and it was delicious.
I was able to help with the farm, but the owner wanted to put me on light duty for insurance reasons, which is kind of good since I have to take care of my knee. So I peeled mint leaves off of their steams, picked wild raspberries in an impressively big raspberry patch, and helped out with other small chores. Living on the farm is not a job, it’s a lifestyle. There are so many chores to do, they seem to be working all day every day. I admire their passion, their strength and their dedication. They are also private people so I won’t say much more about it other than it was a very enlightening experience for me. I also had an awakening at how materialistic I still am, when I see how they operate with so little and have all they need. Most of what they do is done by hand.
At the end of the day, Ruth the daughter took me to downtown Lac Megantic, where I met friends I had met online because of my project, Caroline and Maxime were willing to host me as well but responded after I had accepted Ruth’s invitation. So we decided to meet regardless because they seemed to be great people. We had a short time together as they are musicians and they were preparing to play at the MusiCafe that evening with their friend Adrien, who was on “La Voix” two years ago. I had dinner with the whole band, just like a groupie, even mad a little video of a song they were practicing in their suite. Overall great evening and great people. Unfortunately, I did not get to see their show in the evening because I needed to get up early on Friday to head to Lennoxville.
